Hans Christian Andersen's Stories

In this short tale, Hans Christian Andersen depicts a castle's ramparts on an autumn day. A bird flies through the prison cell window and softens the heart of the miserable prisoner with its song. It was published as the first part of "Two Pictures of Copenhagen" in 1846. Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author, poet and artist. Celebrated for children's literature, his most cherished fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Nightingale", "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl". His books have been translated into every living language, and today there is no child or adult that has not met Andersen's whimsical characters. His fairy tales have been adapted to stage and screen countless times, most notably by Disney with the animated films "The Little Mermaid" in 1989 and "Frozen", which is loosely based on "The Snow Queen", in 2013. Due to his contribution to children's literature, Andersen's birth date, April 2, is celebrated as International Children's Book Day.

At the bottom of the ocean lived the sea king, his old mother and his six daughters. They lived in a beautiful castle, surrounded by a big garden, of which each daughter took care of a small corner. The little mermaid, the youngest and most beautiful of the princesses, liked nothing more than stories of men and in her garden she had a marble statue of a handsome youth, which had sunk below down after a shipwreck. On the day of their fifteenth birthday, the young mermaids had the right to swim to the surface to see the world above and the little mermaid listened with pleasure to the stories her sisters told when they came back from these visits. She waited impatiently for her turn to come.

One day, a diabolical troll made a mirror that showed everything beautiful as ugly and all that was good as evil. Delighted, the trolls decided to carry their mirror to heaven and mock the angels, but on the way the mirror shattered and pieces of the mirror spread across the world. This was how some became windows and others were made into spectacles, but the most unfortunate received tiny pieces in their eyes or in their heart, changing their life for ever. That is what happened to little Kay, to the great chagrin of his neighbour, Gerda, and this is how he crossed the path of the Snow Queen.

Anna Lísa er fríð og lífsglð kona. Son eignast hún en enginn faðir í spilinu. Hún tekur á það ráð að gefa barnið verkamannahjónum. Sjálf ræður hún sig á heimili greifahjóna, og gerist brjóstmóðir sonar þeirra. Hún ber mikla ást til litla fallega drengsins en sjaldan hvarflar hugurinn að ljóta, bæklaða syni hennar sjálfrar. Sonur Önnu Lísu vex upp, án þess að vera elskaður af nokkrum manni. Hann hrekst á milli staða en ræðst að lokum háseti á bát. Ekki vill betur til en svo að báturinn ferst og drengurinn hverfur í hafdjúpin. Á meðan er Anna Lísa orðin feit og fín kona, en hefur steingleymt litla syni sínum. Þegar hún heldur einn daginn í heimsókn til greifadrengsins síns, verður þó bernskuheimili sonarins á vegi hennar. Fjlskylda nokkur verður fyrir þeim harmi að missa yngsta barnið og einkasoninn. Eldri systur hans tvær og faðir þeirra eru yfirkomin af sorg, en mest líður þó móðirin. Dagana eftir andlát barnsins verður hún sífellt rvæntingarfyllri og tapar raunveruleikaskyni sínu. Svo mjg syrgir hún drenginn að hún hættir að taka eftir dætrum sínum og eiginmanni. Nóttina eftir að barnið er grafið laumast móðirin út og leggur leið sína í kirkjugarðinn. Þar situr hún við grfina og óskar þess að sameinast barninu sínu á ný. En þá ber óvæntan gest að garði. Á herragarði nokkrum búa rík hjón, sem leggja mikið uppúr því að gera þeim gott sem minna hafa milli handanna en þau sjálf. Til hjúa þeirra teljast meðal annarra garðyrkjuhjón, sem eiga dreng sem ekki getur stigið í fæturna. Jólahátíð nokkra gefa herragarðshjónin llum brnunum nýja flík, nema þessum farlama dreng. Honum senda þau sgubók, og þykir foreldrum hans fremur lítið til koma. Drengurinn verður mjg elskur að bókinni og les í henni hverja lausa stund. Þar kemur að foreldrar hans spyrjast fyrir um efni bókarinnar, og segir hann þeim þá sgu sem af má lærdóm draga. Þau heillast mjg af boðskapnum og meta sguna mikils. En bókin á eftir að breyta lífi fjlskyldunnar meira en þau órar fyrir. Þýðandi er Steingrímur Thorsteinsson.

Ungur listamaður þjáist af nánast ólæknandi fullkomnunaráráttu. Það er sama hversu fgur verkin hans eru, hann eyðileggur þau ll, því hann er ekki ánægður með útkomuna. Dag einn á hann ferð framhjá furstahll, og sér hina undurfgru dóttur furstans. Slíka fegurð hefur hann aldrei fyrr augum litið, hann verður óðara ástfanginn af henni og flýtir sér heim til að móta mynd hennar úr leir. Styttan af stúlkunni verður engu ðru lík. Allir dáðst að henni og ungi listamaðurinn ákveður að móta hana í marmara. Þá vill svo heppilega til að faðir hennar, furstinn, á leið hjá og festir óðara kaup á hinni fgru marmaramynd. Listamaðurinn keppist við að ljúka verkinu og færa það til furstahallarinnar og líta ástina sína augum. En óendurgoldin ást getur valdið miklum straumhvrfum, og það á ungi maðurinn eftir að reyna. Haustdag einn sitja í niðdimmu fangelsi á brimsorfinni sjávarstrnd fangar, hinir vestu óbótamenn. Í klefanum sínum sitja þeir ófrýnir og vondir. En þá gerist nokkuð undur. Ofurlítill geisli af haustsólarsetrinu smýgur inn og fellur á andlit eins fangans. Í sama bili hefur lítill sngfugl upp raust sína og syngur svolítinn lagstúf. Þetta fallega tákn frá náttúrunni breytir ásjónu fangans, og hugsunum hans líka. Þó ekki sé nema rstutta hverfula sólarstund. Þýðandi er Steingrímur Thorsteinsson.

All the local children knew the river Odense and they all knew about the bell that could be found there. A long time ago, the bell, being tired, had fallen from its beam and had landed in the river, at the place, which is known today as the Bell-Deep. They say that when it rings, it tells stories of ancient times to the River Man... Could it be true?

In the tallest and poorest house in a very narrow winding street, was an attic with a single window. Behind this window, was a bird in a cage; the state of the house and the cage were so miserable that the bird did not even have a cup for drinking: he had to make do with the neck of a bottle closed with a stopper. The bird had no problem with this and sang joyfully - as for the bottle neck, he remembered the good old days when he was still a bottle...

A flea, a grasshopper and a jumping goose entered a competition to see who could jump the highest. Who would win? That is a question that would turn out to be more complicated than expected.

Everyone was happy: an heir had been born and mother and son were doing well! Almost all the fairies came to offer a gift to the newborn, there was just one missing who should have brought the last pearl... Luckily, the child's guardian angel knew where to find it!

It was the month of May and spring had arrived, although it was still cold. The flowers were blooming, but not all flowers receive the same praise. Some would say that there a difference between a branch of apple blossom and a flower of the fields, but is there really?

Every year, for Christmas, together with his wife, he welcomed all the poor children of the area to the castle and treated them to a great celebration with gifts and feasting. As Ole and Kristen worked very hard, their children received more gifts than the others, even Hans, who was called the Cripple because his legs were too weak to carry him. But this year, while his brothers and sisters received warm clothes, Hans received only a story book. Ole and Kristen would have preferred warm clothing for him too, but Hans was happy to have something to read during the long hours he spent in his bed. Ole and Kristen worked hard to maintain the castle gardens and envied their master who was rich without needing to work. One evening, Hans heard his parents complaining about this once again and offered to read them one the stories from the book he had received for Christmas. Ole and Kristen would never have believed it, but the reading of a simply story would change the life of this poor family...  

One sunny day, when a little sea fish was swimming joyfully with his eighteen thousand brothers and sisters, the water was darkened by an enormous eel who came from above and was heading deeper into the sea. It disappeared very quickly and as soon as the calm had returned, the cutest little fish, who was also the most curious, went looking for information to find out who this newcomer to the Ocean was. Could it be the great sea serpent?

Oflátungslegur flibbi bítur í sig þá hugmynd að hann sé kominn á giftingaraldur. Hann fer á fjrurnar við fallegt sokkaband í þvottakrfunni, en fær afdráttarlausa hfnun. Strauboltinn tekur málskrúði hans fortum fjarri og skærin sníða í hann rifu til að sýna vandlætingu sína. Loks leitar hann ásjár hjá greiðunni, en hún reynist lofuð ðrum. Þegar nálgast ævikvldið hyggst flibbinn fegra sgu sína, og segir hana fjálglega. En dramb er falli næst og hans bíða nokkuð óvænt rlg. Þýðandi er Steingrímur Thorsteinsson.

Í anddyri veislu nokkurrar sitja tvær konur. Þær eru þó ekki allar þar sem þær eru séðar, því þegar betur er að gáð, reynist nnur þeirra vera ein af dísum Gæfunnar en hin er Sorgin sjálf. Gæfudísin hefur farið víða um daginn og gefið fólki af gæfu sinni. Hróðug segir hún Sorginni frá því að í dag sé afmælisdagur hennar, og því muni hún skilja eftir í fatahenginu eitt par af gæfuskóm þeirrar náttúru, að hver sem þá ber fær hverja sína ósk uppfyllta. Sorgin telur litla gæfu muni fylgja þessum skóm, þvert á móti muni eigendur þeirra verða ósælir meðan þeir beri þá. Gæfudísin telur það af og frá, en Sorginni ratast satt á munn. Prinsessa nokkur hefur látið þau boð út ganga, að hún muni taka sér fyrir eiginmann þann biðil sem best komi fyrir sig orði. Allir þeir ungu menn sem nokkuð telja sig hafa til brunns að bera leggja af stað í bónorðsfr. Það gera einnig bræður tveir sem þykja afburða gáfaðir. Faðir þeirra ljær þeim gæðinga mikla til fararinnar, en þegar þeir eru við það að hleypa úr hlaði birtist þriðji bróðirinn. Sá þykir heldur fákænn, en er engu að síður staðráðinn í að vinna ástir prinsessunnar. Bræður hans gera að honum stólpa grí

Litli Kláus á einn hest, en stóri Kláus fjóra. Alla daga vikunnar nema sunnudag verður litli Kláus að lána sinn eina hest fyrir plóginn með hestum stóra Kláusar. Á sunnudgum hefur hann þó hópinn fyrir sig og færist kapp í kinn við jarðvinnuna. Hann freistast til að eigna sér hrossin í huganum og í orði, en það getur stóri Kláus ekki þolað og drepur hestinn hans litla Kláusar. Sársorgmæddur heldur litli Kláus af stað í ferð með hrosshúðina með sér í pokaskjatta. Fyrstu nóttina biðst hann gistingar hjá bændahjónum, sem hann á síðar eftir að leika laglega á. En sú brella er bara sú fyrsta í rð bellibragða sem hann notar til að ná fram hefnd sinni á stóra Kláusi. Þýðandi er Steingrímur Thorsteinsson.
