La vie : c'est comme une bicyclette, il faut avancer pour ne pas perdre l'équilibre rassemble huit scénarios sous forme de textes cinématographiques qui explorent, à travers la fiction, un siècle d'évolution des soins en santé mentale. Inspirés de faits vécus, d'enquêtes et d'archives, ces récits suivent le parcours de personnes atteintes d'un trouble de santé mentale grave et lèvent le voile sur l'expérience de leurs proches ainsi que sur le rôle des personnes soignantes. Chaque scénario plonge dans une période marquante, depuis l'institutionnalisation asilaire jusqu'aux pratiques axées sur le rétablissement, en passant par le mouvement de désinstitutionnalisation, révélant comment les pratiques psychiatriques, les rapports humains et les perceptions de la maladie ont changé au fil du temps. Ensemble, ces histoires mettent en lumière la résilience, la solidarité et le rôle essentiel des proches aidants dans les parcours de vie et de soins. Fruit d'une collaboration entre des membres de la communauté universitaire en histoire, en sciences infirmières et en études cinématographiques, ce recueil s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet SCRIPPT : Scénarisation de récits individuels de parcours psychiatriques transinstitutionnels, soutenu par le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada. Cette approche originale raconte le traitement de la maladie mentale dans un format accessible à toutes et à tous.

Dawaa: The Space Between celebrates in poetry the tensions and beauty between the two ancestral languages of the author: Ojibwe and English. As a First Nations woman, Tareyn Johnson grew up without knowing the language of her ancestors. Her grandparents attended residential school, and neither they, nor her mother carried the language. Left with a deep longing desire to embrace Anishnaabemowin (Ojibwe) language, she began her learning journey as an adult. As the lists of words grew, they began to form visually in the author's mind. As a result, 26 poems-two for each of the Thirteen Moons-grouped seasonally, beautifully juxtapose Ojibwe and English to express Johnson's feeling of existing as an Anishnaabekwe in the modern world. Dawaa is not intended as a didactic tool, or as a language teaching tool. This book of poetry examines the unique experience of walking into worlds, speaking and learning two languages, and relating the two ways of knowing in a liminal space... the space between. nanda-gikendan-seek to know it, seek to learn it.

Few unknown figures have left such a lasting mark on the world as Robert "Bicycle Bob" Silverman. A true nonconformist, this tireless advocate for urban cycling lived an extraordinary life. Poet, bookseller, restaurateur, traveler, educator, gallery owner-but above all, a passionate cycling activist-Bob led his vélorution (a term he was the first to popularize in Canada) with authenticity, ingenuity, and boundless creativity. With his small but dedicated group, Le Monde à Bicyclette (MàB), and a handful of allies, Bob Silverman achieved the impossible. Over three decades, Montreal transformed from one of the least bike-friendly cities in North America into its cycling capital-thanks in part to MàB's colorful cyclodramas, street theatre protests where members donned costumes to make their point. Silverman's story reads like a film script. A poet and independent bookseller in the 1960s, he drew in a vibrant circle of artists, intellectuals, and musicians, including Leonard Cohen and Armand Vaillancourt. In 1962, he traveled to Cuba to join Fidel Castro's revolution, meeting none other than Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Later, he worked on an Israeli kibbutz, becoming one of the rare Jewish activists to shake hands with Yasser Arafat. He studied in France and Spain, pioneered outdoor volleyball, and never shied away from challenging the status quo. A larger-than-life figure, Robert Silverman was, as many describe him, "a prophet before his time." Discover how this real-life Man of La Mancha managed to reach a few unreachable stars...

This novel paints the portrait of a Lebanese family that has settled in Montreal. The central figure is Dounia, a 75-year-old mother and grandmother. Hers is a story of loss-she first leaves her own village to live in her husband's hometown, and then is wrenched from her homeland, not once but twice, to live in a strange land whose language and customs are foreign to her. Dounia can neither read nor write, and she speaks only Arabic. Illiterate yet perceptive, nourished by Lebanese proverbs and pearls of wisdom, she has a unique and captivating voice. She struggles, yes, but manages to achieve fulfilment in her new world: "My home is where my grandchildren are, clinging to my neck, calling me Sitto Dounia [...] in my language. I want to die where my children and my grandchildren live." Abla Farhoud was an actor and playwright before becoming a novelist in 1998 with the publication of this novel, the French title of which was Le bonheur a la queue glissante, awarded the France-Québec - Philippe Rossillon Prize. Other novels followed, including Le Sourire de la petite Juive (published in English as Hutchison Street), Le dernier des Snoreux, and the posthumous book Havre-Saint-Pierre. Abla Farhoud passed away in 2021.

Master poets Ooka Makoto, Shuntaro Tanikawa, Kim Yong-Jik were joined by Canadian Roseann O'Reilly Runte in Tokyo on a very warm August day in 1991 to compose a linked-verse poem. It was also the day the Soviet Parliament was stormed, foreshadowing the end of the Cold War. Not knowing the future, the poets chose to celebrate the lasting power of words to survive discord and violence. They believed the beauty of poetry would inspire and transcend time, national and linguistic borders. They followed an ancient Japanese poetic form called Renga and they wrote simultaneously in English, French, Japanese and Korean. This volume includes the original recording made by the poets, artwork inspired by the poems by Sylviane de Roquebrune and music by Casey Sokol. The Renga form dates from medieval times when poets came together at a castle to compose in the course of a single day linked verses that responded to each other, creating a poetic dialogue. We believe this to be the sole Renga ever composed completely in four languages at once.
