Immanuel Kant's `Critique of Pure Reason' (1781/1787) is the German philosopher's best-known work. A controversial book of it's time, Kant sought to determine the limits of metaphysics. In this ground-breaking work, Kant redefines our understanding of epistemology by combining two opposing philosophical theories: rationalism and empiricism. For anyone who was inspired by the character Chidi's love of Kant in Netflix's 'The Good Place', `Critique of Pure Reason' is as innovative as it is interesting and a must-read for all philosophy enthusiasts. Immanuel Kant (1724 - 1804) was a German philosopher and a key Enlightenment theorist who continues to be a prominent influence in Western philosophy. Raised in a pious household with devout parents, Kant quickly became known for his work in ethics and metaphysics. He is best known for his works `Critique of Pure Reason' (1781/1787) and `Critique of Judgement' (1790). Kant's legacy has had far reaching impacts, influencing notable figures such as Carl Jung, Noam Chomsky and Albert Einstein. Kant's final days were portrayed in the slapstick comedy `The Last Days of Immanuel Kant' (1996) starring Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati.

Couverture ebook de Kritik der reinen Vernunft - 1. Auflage, de Immanuel Kant
Librofilio | 28 septembre 2026

What is Enlightenment? Enlightenment is man's release from his self-incurred tutelage. Tutelage is man's inability to make use of his understanding without direction from another. Self-incurred is this tutelage when its cause lies not in lack of reason but in lack of resolution and courage to use it without direction from another. "Have courage to use your own reason!" - that is the motto of enlightenment.

Slingshot Books LLC | 9 août 2022

This essay of Kant's on copyright argues that the unlicensed copying of books cannot possibly be permissible, due to the fact that it assumes a consent on the part of the author which it is logically impossible for the author to give. The argument is dependent upon an assumption that the writings be commodified, for the reason why the author is unable to possibly give consent to multiple publishers is due to the author's will - to communicate with the public - necessitating the profitability of the publisher, for, it is assumed, there is no way to communicate with the public at large without a great expense which can only be borne by a publishing firm. This is, of course, no longer a necessary assumption. Other arguments here are also of interest: this is a foundational document in claims regarding the moral rights of authors, and Kant's account of the connection between the communicative intent of the author and the rights resultant is of continuing importance ; the distinction between works and acts in the "Universal Observation" strikes us as odd today, but is worthy of consideration; his admission of the permissibility of derivative works is striking; and, strangely, the first footnote uses as a reductio ad absurdum an idea of liability which underlies what United States law today calls by the name of "contributory infringement."

Couverture audiobook de Kant´s Foundations of Ethics, de Immanuel Kant
Saga Egmont | 15 avril 2020

These works articulate the most fundamental principles of Kant's ethical and political world-view. "What is Enlightenment?" (1784) and "Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals" (1785) challenge all free people to think about the requirements for self-determination both in our individual lives and in our public and private institutions. Kant's "Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals" is dedicated to the proposition that all people can know what they need to know to be honest, good, wise, and virtuous. The purpose of Kant's moral philosophy is to help us become aware of the principles that are already contained within us. Innocence and dependence must be replaced with wisdom and good will if we are to avoid being vulnerable and misguided. According to Kant, freedom of thought leads naturally to freedom of action. When that happens, governments begin to treat human beings, not as machines, but as persons with dignity. Immanuel Kant begins "Toward Lasting Peace" by contrasting the realism of practical politicians with the high-minded theories of philosophers who "dream their sweet dreams." His opening line provides a grim reminder that the only alternative to finding a way to avoid the war of each against all is the lasting peace of the graveyard. The advent of total war and the development of nuclear weapons in the twentieth century give Kant's reflections an urgency he could not have anticipated. Kant published this work in 1795, during the aftermath of the American Revolution and the French Revolution. The high hopes of the European Enlightenment had been dampened by the Reign of Terror in which tens of thousands of people died, and the perpetual cycle of war and temporary armistice seemed to be inescapable. Kant's essay is best known as an early articulation of the idea of a league of nations that could bring "an end to all hostilities." Today The United Nations continues to pursue that dream, but lasting peace still seems to be wishful thinking.
