Lecture -- Can I Say Indian(There is a table stage right and a stool stage left.On the table there is a laptop, used by the performer to control their own light and video cues.On the stool sits a suicide vest. Also used by the performer to... you know... The performer enters through the house. The performer should acknowledge the traditional keepers of the land they are sharing space on. This should ideally be in keeping with the customs of the area. This should be performed off book, honest, reflexive. The Performer puts on the suicide vest with an air of ritual. It's an invocation. Can I say Indian? I don't mean Indian. I mean Indian Indian. You know, like, Good Indian.Narrative 1You know what a cannibal is?Cannibal: consumer of the flesh of one's own species. In the Caribbean, European explorers classified the Indigenous people they encountered as one of two types: Cannibal or peaceful. Carib or Arawak. Naughty or nice.Lecture - A BombThis is a suicide vest.I made it myself. It's gonna off in about thirty minutes.(A countdown clock appears, then disappears.)The thing is, it's actually not that hard to make. You can get most of the stuff online.Google it.In porn mode."Incognito."Where no one can see you... except CSIS.So -- this, for example, is what's in the vest.(Pulls something out of the vest.)No, that's Tic Tacs.This.(Pulls out an explosive from the vest.)This is C3.It's a lot like C4, only you can get it on Amazon. With the amount I have strapped to me now --If I were to stand back here -- (Moves all the way upstage.)The blast radius would reach only about the lip of the stage.(Moves all the way downstage.)But they put my light up here, so...So if you aren't comfortable with that... Move back. Not that it makes much of a difference.People think that it's the explosion that does the most damage -- like, that kills other people --the collateral damage. It's not.
This play is part of a series that Donna-Michelle St. Bernard is writing called the 54ology, where the playwright and her collaborators look at each country in Africa through a different piece of performance work. Through artistic responses to current and historical events, the project seeks to acknowledge the internal and external pressures of politics, economics, international trade, cultural and spiritual divergence, colonial consequence, natural resources, language, etc., in the life of a complex and variegated continent. The play is inspired by the experience of Acholi people in Uganda's civil conflict. It's a not-altogether-oblique reference to events surrounding the crimes of Joseph Kony and the Lords Resistance Army, derived from extensive research and interviews. When talking about the play, the term "child abductees" is intentionally used instead of the more common "child soldiers" to relocate culpability. The First Stone was produced by the Great Canadian Theatre Company and Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in Toronto from October 6-23, 2022.
First produced by Geordie Theatre, Montreal, in April 2019.The play is inspired by the book A Dance Like Starlight by Kristy Dempsey, but takes place two generations later. This is the first book for young audiences by the three-time Governor General's Literary Award finalist.
Prosper is a fisherman trying to get by in the face of everyday problems: there's the spectre of the baby his wife desires, the ghost of his dead mistress, his wife's secret admirer, and the overwhelming lure of the village bar. When a slippery eel salesman arrives in town peddling progress to the rural community, Prosper's list of problems only increases. Faced with an invasive new species in his lake, his fortunes decline along with the fish population, and Prosper gets a lesson in gift horses and generosity. A Man A Fish is a part of the 54ology, inspired by events in Burundi.
Gigi and Lola live by one motto: love for gas, gas for cash, cash for living, living for love. Living in Zimbabwe's depressed economy, both women live day-by-day, plying their trade with the truck drivers that stop at the border. Gigi knows the limitations of her trade, while her young protege, Lola, looks for love in every man that comes her way. Lola's brother, Chickn, ekes out his own living while keeping an ever-watchful eye for Gigi's affections and Lola's safety. But love is not a luxury these girls can afford. Through story, song, and play, Gigi and Lola inspire each other to find joy on the edges of survival.
