Almost English brings to life the grueling racism and poverty faced by a mixed-race, Anglo-Indian family during the British Raj in India. Stephen Turner was neither Indian, nor English, though he longed to belong to the Raj. Set in the exotic Northwest Frontier of India 1885-1912, this story is based on the author's great-grandparents. Readers of William Dalrymple and MJ Vassanji will find much to enjoy in this genre-bending work. Almost English melds history, bio-fiction and nonfiction, as well as family photographs, letters and works of art, to bring a new perspective to this era.
