Ze schreef weinig in deze periode, maar zei hierover: `Ik dicht nog weinig, maar hoe luttel ook; ik wil voor niets ter wereld dat dichter-zijn afstaan en de groot weelde missen van geren [d.i. graag] alleen te zijn en schoonheid uit m'n leed te puren.' Haar eerste bundels hadden haar het image van melancholieke schoonheid gegeven, maar met `Schaduw' probeerde ze een andere weg in te slaan: minder de romantische traditie, meer het experiment. Het publiek was minder enthousiast over `Schaduw', maar achteraf beschouwd zie je in elk van haar bundels een iets andere Nahon. `Schaduw' is een onmisbaar facet van haar talent.Alice Nahon (1896-1933) werd geboren in Antwerpen, als derde van elf kinderen. Haar vader (een Nederlander) was boekhandelaar, haar moeder onderwijzeres. Al tijdens haar studie schreef Nahon haar eerste gedichten. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werkte ze als verpleegster, maar ze liep zelf een longontsteking op: het begin van een lang ziekteproces. In 1917 werd ze opgenomen in een sanatorium in Tessenderlo als tbc-patiënte. Pas toen ze in 1923 naar Zwitserland reisde, werd ontdekt dat ze aan chronische bronchitis leed. Haar debuutbundel `Vondelingskens' verscheen in 1920, gevolgd door `Op zachte vooizekens' (1921), `Schaduw' (1928) en de postume bundel `Maart-April' (1936). Nahons bundels werden heel populair en verkochten goed in België en Nederland.
