Publié en 1924, La sculpture allemande du xie au xiiie siècle d'Erwin Panofsky appartient à un genre qui connaît alors un grand succès : abondamment illustré de grandes planches, l'ouvrage est destiné à un public cultivé, certes, mais pas nécessairement savant. Le texte doit éclairer le lecteur et décrire avec suffisamment de précision les oeuvres reproduites afin de leur assigner une localisation dans le temps et l'espace. Débordant quelque peu ce cahier des charges éditorial, Panofsky se livre ici à une analyse formelle très fine, qui n'accorde pas une place centrale aux questions iconographiques et iconologiques soulevées par les oeuvres, contrairement à ce qu'il fera dans la seconde partie de sa carrière, après son exil aux États-Unis (1933). La sculpture allemande dont nous présentons ici la première traduction française révèle donc le Panofsky d'avant Panofsky. Une présentation de Christian Freigang met l'oeuvre en perspective et la replace dans le contexte historique, intellectuel et philosophique où a évolué Panofsky durant la première partie de sa carrière.
