Why Did Latin Disappear ?
Why Did Latin Disappear ? This incisive essay published by the Five Minutes publishing house in the SAVOIR EN BREF collection traces the unexpected fate of the language that shaped Europe. Initially an imperial idiom and the lingua franca of scholars, Latin was relegated to the status of a dead language by the Reformation, the printing press and the rise of national tongues. Drawing on recent research and new statistics, the book shows how modern schooling and the Second Vatican Council accelerated its decline while reminding us that Latin survives in law, medicine and nearly half of English vocabulary.
Why continue to study it ? Because Latin develops logic, enriches grammatical understanding and opens the door to the cultures that built our world. Through concrete examples - the abolition of the Latin Excellence programme, the elimination of courses in the United States, and initiatives by charter schools - the work exposes the educational and social stakes of a Latin renaissance.
Hold on tight : this journey will reveal that Latin's disappearance is only a mirage and that it remains a powerful tool for knowledge. A call to action for educators, parents and all who wish to reintroduce this millennial language into our future.
