Between Duty and Desire
The pilot has the conn. You do not leave the wheel, not for weather, not for fear, not for love. You bring every soul through the reach. My father taught me the creed before the ice took his nerve, and I have lived by it every winter since, guiding freighters through the one black channel on the lake that kills the men who guess. Duty is the wheel. I never once let go of it. Not until Bennett Tarrbrook came home to Tanager Harbor with a dead man's orders in his mouth and a way of looking at me that made the wheel feel like a cage.
Seven winters ago his family broke mine. Now he owns the line that owns the harbor, and he has come back bound by an oath to his father to finish the job, to run the independent pilots off the water and take the reach for himself. He should be the easiest man in the world to hate. He is not. Because I can see it in him, the same thing that is in me, a man lashed to a duty he no longer believes in, wanting the one thing the duty forbids.
And there is his brother. Thad does not want the harbor. Thad wants the debt paid in full, and where Bennett hesitates, Thad does not, and the ice is coming in early this year, and the last freighter of the season has to come through my channel before the freeze, and someone has decided she should not come through at all.
I have brought a thousand ships home through water that wanted them dead. I do not know yet if I can bring us home too, the harbor and the man and myself, without letting go of the wheel that is the only thing that ever kept me safe. But desire is its own dark channel, and some crossings you cannot pilot from shore.
