A Cool Million. Illustrated
A Cool Million: The Dismantling of Lemuel Pitkin (1934) by Nathanael West is a biting political satire that mercilessly parodies the American Dream. Written with sharp irony and grotesque humor, the novel dismantles the myth of success through the tragicomic story of an innocent young man destroyed by the very ideals he believes in.
The protagonist, Lemuel Pitkin, is a naïve and optimistic youth who sets out to make his fortune in America, armed only with good intentions and boundless faith in hard work. However, instead of opportunity and prosperity, he encounters swindlers, corruption, violence, and relentless misfortune. Piece by piece-both metaphorically and literally-Lemuel is stripped of his health, freedom, dignity, and even body parts, until he becomes a symbol of the broken promises of the nation.
West draws inspiration from Horatio Alger's "rags-to-riches" tales but subverts them into a nightmarish parody. Lemuel's misadventures highlight the exploitation of the poor, the cruelty of unchecked capitalism, and the rise of dangerous nationalism during the 1930s.
At once absurd, darkly comic, and deeply tragic, A Cool Million reflects West's mastery of satire and his ability to turn the American success story into a grotesque fable of failure.
This short novel remains a razor-sharp critique of idealism, exposing how innocence and blind faith can be mercilessly crushed by the harsh realities of society.
