Aristotle
Aristotle
One of the most important philosophical works in history, a work that has had tremendous influence on philosophy, literature, and psychology, and has helped lay the foundations of the modern day intellectual landscape. The influence of 'The Nicomachean Ethics' is still visible in the works of philosophers of the 21st century, such as Martha Nussbaum and Alasdair MacIntyre. With remarkable lucidity, Aristotle tackles the question of the nature of happiness, and that of moral and intellectual virtues. He aims to prove that both are linked to and indivisible from one another-that virtuous behaviour is necessary if happiness is to be obtained-and from this he maps out the steps to follow and the requirements to achieve it. In short, 'The Nicomachean Ethics' sketches out a hierarchy of virtues to find the highest good a human can accomplish, which in turn will lead them to true happiness.Aristotle (384-322 BC) is one of the most influential philosophers in history. His achievements and the breadth of his knowledge, though, do not stop at philosophy. He is also among the rare thinkers to have approached all the fields of knowledge he came across (biology, physics, metaphysics, logic, poetics, politics, rhetoric, ethics, economics) with success. Among his works, the most lauded are: "Metaphysics", "On the Soul" and "Poetics".
We live in an era rife with cultural conflict. The 21st century is by no means free of wars, terrorism, riots, famine, nor epidemics. We may attempt to solve the challenges of our times by uniting the humanistic disciplines of philosophy, science, and technology. Our modern reality requires a fundamental understanding of the problems beleaguering our existence. Science and literature are key tools for gaining this insight. The wisdom accumulated throughout the centuries by scientists, philosophers, and writers is a solid foundation on which modern man can build the future. Our ability to learn from those who have come before is precisely what led Protagoras to declare that "Man is the measure of all things." On the Soul , Latin De Anima) is a major treatise by Aristotle on the nature of living things. His discussion centres on the kinds of souls possessed by different kinds of living things, distinguished by their different operations. Thus plants have the capacity for nourishment and reproduction, the minimum that must be possessed by any kind of living organism. Lower animals have, in addition, the powers of sense-perception and self-motion . Humans have all these as well as intellect. The notion of soul used by Aristotle is only distantly related to the usual modern conception. He holds that the soul is the form, or essence of any living thing; that it is not a distinct substance from the body that it is in; that it is the possession of soul that makes an organism an organism at all, and thus that the notion of a body without a soul, or of a soul in the wrong kind of body, is simply unintelligible. It is difficult to reconcile these points with the popular picture of a soul as a sort of spiritual substance "inhabiting" a body.

This book treats of the Problem of Psychology and the attempts which have been made to solve it; The Nature of Soul and its specific Forms; The Intellectual and Active Powers. "The acquisition of knowledge is always something high and honourable; but one form of knowledge is superior to another either in virtue of the self-contained simplicity of its truths or by the greater dignity and wondrousness of its contents: and on both these grounds the investigation of the soul might with justice claim a foremost place. And, besides, the knowledge of it is thought to have important bearings on truth generally and especially on nature: for soul is as it were the prime factor in animal existence. The object of our enquiry is to observe and to discover both the historical development and the essential nature of the soul, and further to find out the phenomena occurring in connection with it - phenomena of which some are thought to be affections peculiar to the soul itself, others, while owing their existence to the soul, are thought to belong to the animal nature taken as a whole..."
