Conosciuta principalmente per i romanzi d'appendice, Flavia Steno avvia la sua carriera come collaboratrice nella redazione del quotidiano genovese "Il Secolo XIX" e presto si affilia all'Associazione della donna. Nel 1915 si reca in Germania come corrispondente di guerra, dove scrive con lo pseudonimo maschile Marco Valeri. Nel 1944 viene condannata a quindici anni di carcere per essersi opposta all'ideologia fascista, dei quali ne sconta solo uno grazie all'avvento fortuito della caduta del regime. Nel 1932 è insigne del titolo Scrittore d'arte indetto dall'Accademia linguistica delle belle arti di Genova. Tra i suoi romanzi più famosi ricordiamo "Sua moglie", "Sissignora", "L'ultimo sogno", "Il gioiello sinistro" e "La veste d'amianto".
