In queste pagine viene proposta una variazione filosofica sul tema di Eros che domina incontrastato nella cultura occidentale secondo due modalità apparentemente dissonanti ma in realtà complementari, di incanto e di scepsi. Nel ben noto quadro di René Magritte Gli amanti, i due soggetti si abbracciano con il volto velato, senza poter scorgere lo sguardo altrui, in quanto è preclusa loro l'esperienza dell'altro. Memore della materna filiazione platonica di Eros da Penìa, la modernità insiste e radicalizza tale configurazione difettiva almeno a partire da Stendhal che, nel saggio ottocentesco inaugurale sull'amore, allude a una cristallizzazione di qualcosa che non ha alcun valore ma a cui vengono attribuite doti superlative e desiderabili. Al termine di tale percorso nichilisticamente orientato (che vede protagonisti anche Bataille, Proust e Valéry) - in cui l'altro è un mero duplicato interiore - l'amore non sarà altro che l'esperienza del Nulla.
