G. K. Chesterton

G. K. Chesterton

K. Chesterton that delves into the clash between rationalism and Christianity. Serialized from 1905 to 1906 and published in 1909, the story begins with debates between Professor Lucifer and a monk named Michael. The narrative then unfolds into a duel, both figurative and somewhat literal, between a Jacobite Catholic named Evan Maclan and an atheist Socialist named James Turnbull. The novel is argued to be more sympathetic to Maclan, although it also portrays him as somewhat extreme. Similarly, Turnbull is presented in a sympathetic light, and the dueling duo develops a partnership that evolves into friendship. The real antagonist is the outside world, which tries to prevent the duel over religious beliefs. Many have drawn parallels between the novel and Chesterton's public debates over religion with his friend, George Bernard Shaw. The novel is available as an etext at G. K. Chesterton's Works on the Web and at Project Gutenberg. Dale Ahlquist has also delivered a lecture on "The Ball and the Cross" as part of the "Chesterton 101" series by the American Chesterton Society.

Asimis Books | 24 mars 2026

Four Faultless Felons by G. K. Chesterton is a dazzling collection of detective stories that playfully overturn the conventions of crime fiction. In these four tales, Chesterton presents criminals who appear "faultless"-their actions morally justified, logically flawless, or socially sympathetic-yet whose cases reveal deeper paradoxes beneath the surface. The stories feature eccentric investigators, sharp dialogue, and unexpected twists that challenge readers to question assumptions about guilt, innocence, and justice. Rather than focusing solely on legal wrongdoing, Chesterton explores the moral and philosophical dimensions of crime. Each narrative unfolds like an intellectual puzzle, where appearances deceive and motives are rarely simple. With his trademark wit and love of paradox, Chesterton blurs the line between hero and villain. The collection reflects his belief that truth often hides behind irony, and that moral clarity requires imagination as much as reason. The "faultless felons" themselves become symbols of human complexity, illustrating how righteousness and wrongdoing can become strangely intertwined. Blending humor, suspense, and philosophical insight, Four Faultless Felons stands as a distinctive contribution to early twentieth-century detective literature. It offers not only cleverly constructed mysteries but also a meditation on conscience, justice, and the enduring mystery of the human heart.

Couverture ebook de The Napoleon of Notting Hill. Illustrated, de G. K. Chesterton
Asimis Books | 24 mars 2026

The Napoleon of Notting Hill by G. K. Chesterton is a brilliant and whimsical political fantasy that blends satire, romance, and philosophical reflection. Set in a futuristic London where politics has become little more than a hollow formality, the novel imagines a society governed by routine and indifference-until imagination unexpectedly disrupts complacency. The story begins when Auberon Quin, a mischievous and eccentric king, appoints Adam Wayne as Provost of Notting Hill. What begins as a joke-reviving medieval pageantry, heraldry, and local patriotism-soon turns serious as Wayne passionately embraces the identity and honor of his district. His devotion transforms symbolic play into genuine political conviction, igniting conflict among the boroughs of London. Through humor and exaggerated situations, Chesterton explores themes of patriotism, loyalty, and the power of belief. The novel questions whether modern society has lost its sense of wonder and whether even the smallest community can inspire heroic courage. Beneath its comic surface lies a meditation on the importance of ideals in an age of cynicism. Chesterton's prose is lively, paradoxical, and richly imaginative, combining sharp wit with lyrical passages. His distinctive voice turns political satire into a celebration of imagination and moral seriousness. The Napoleon of Notting Hill remains a charming and thought-provoking work, affirming the value of local identity, romantic heroism, and the transformative force of conviction in an increasingly mechanized world.

Couverture ebook de The Man Who Knew Too Much. Illustrated, de G. K. Chesterton
Fanela Publishing | 12 mars 2026

The Man Who Knew Too Much is a collection of detective stories by G. K. Chesterton. The book follows the adventures of Horne Fisher, a man who understands the hidden connections between politics, society, and crime. Because of his knowledge of powerful people and secret relationships, Fisher often knows the truth about crimes that others cannot see. Together with his friend Harold March, Fisher encounters mysterious events, political scandals, and unusual crimes. However, knowing the truth does not always mean that justice can be done. Many of the criminals belong to the highest levels of society, which makes it difficult to expose them openly. The stories explore themes of power, corruption, morality, and the limits of justice. Chesterton combines mystery with philosophical reflections about society and human nature, creating detective stories that are both entertaining and thought-provoking.

It is a stimulating, exciting, tremendously interesting book."

Couverture ebook de Le Nommé Jeudi, de G. K. Chesterton
Saga Egmont | 7 septembre 2021

Himself both a modernist and devout Catholic, he is remembered best for his priest-detective short stories `Father Brown', and his metaphysical thriller `The Man Who Was Thursday'. In his lifetime, Chesterton befriended and debated some of the greatest thinkers of the age, such as George Bernard Shore, H. G. Wells, and Bertrand Russell, while his works went on to inspire figures including T. S. Eliot, Michael Collins, and Mahatma Gandhi.
