Shen of the Sea: Chinese Stories for Children - Newbery Medal Winner, 1926. Illustrated
Shen of the Sea: Chinese Stories for Children by Arthur Bowie Chrisman is a delightful collection of sixteen original short stories inspired by ancient Chinese folklore. Winner of the Newbery Medal in 1926, the book introduces young readers to a world of clever emperors, magical inventions, foolish kings, and wise peasants-all brought to life with wit and imagination.
Though not direct retellings of traditional tales, Chrisman's stories are written in the style and spirit of classic Chinese storytelling. With titles like "Ah Mee's Invention," "That Lazy Ah Fun," and "The Rain King's Daughter," the collection blends humor, gentle morals, and fanciful plots to both entertain and educate.
Each story offers a lesson-often about cleverness, humility, or justice-wrapped in engaging narratives that appeal to readers of all ages. The language is simple but lyrical, making it accessible for children while still enjoyable for adults.
Shen of the Sea remains a unique contribution to children's literature-an early example of multicultural storytelling written with creativity, respect, and timeless appeal.
