New Mexico Territory, 1885. Elias Bishop owns the Sweetwater Ranch and half the lawyers in the territory - and he needs one more. Tom Kingsley came west from Philadelphia to drink himself to death and failed at it. When Elias buys his debts out from under him one Tuesday at the bar and installs him in the ranch house as a 'clerk,' Tom knows exactly what the word means. He stays anyway. Over eighteen months Tom builds Elias a legal fortress - water rights, land deeds, murder defenses - and Elias builds Tom a cage with a wide view. Then Tom finds the receipt of a killing from 1878, and the name on it is Elias's. He has six weeks to decide what to do with it. So does Elias. A dark MM historical western romance for readers who like their love stories with a courthouse in the third act.
