The telegraphist gets involved with a pair of lovers named Captain Everard and Lady Bradeen, and she manages to reassure Everard that their secrets are safe from detection. Later, she learns that Lady Bradeen is forcing Everard to marry her, as he is heavily in debt and not interested in her. The telegraphist eventually decides to marry her fiancé, Mr. Mudge, and reflects on the unusual events she was a part of. James got the idea for the story from his experiences at the telegraphist's office, and the protagonist can be seen as a version of the Jamesian artist. Critics have generally been kind to the story, praising the detailed and convincing portrait of the telegraphist. Some have compared the story to "The Turn of the Screw," but the telegraphist seems much better grounded in reality. The story is not one of class conflict, but rather a reflection on the protagonist's lively imagination and nearly photographic memory.

The story follows John Marcher, who believes his life is destined for a catastrophic or spectacular event, like a "beast in the jungle." Marcher is reacquainted with May Bartram, a woman he knew ten years earlier, who decides to spend her days with him, curiously awaiting what fate has in store for him. Marcher is a hopeless fatalist who takes May to the theater and invites her to occasional dinners but does not allow her to get close to him. The story has been read as a confession or parable about James' own life. Critics have almost unanimously agreed with the author's own high opinion of the tale, with some going so far as to put the story among the best short narratives in any literature. The novella has been adapted into several films and referenced in literature and television.
Regarded as one of his finest works, Henry James' `The Bostonians' (1886) is a brilliant satire about the women's rights movement in America. Verena Tarrant is an inspirational feminist speaker, but her two disparate cousins are at loggerheads as they seek to control her future. Boston feminist Olive Chancellor hopes to turn Verena into a famous activist, while Basil Ransom, a southern lawyer, hopes to win Verena's heart.Fans of ´The Bostonians´ might want to watch the movie adaptation from 1984, starring Christopher Reeve and Vanessa Redgrave.Henry James (1843-1916) was an American-born British author, and one of the founders of the school of realism in fiction.

"The Portrait of a Lady" has been adapted for the big screen many times with the most notable being from 1996 starring Nicole Kidman and John Malkovich.

Originally published in 1875 as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly, Roderick Hudson is a One has the money but not the talent. One has the talent but not the money. It would seem that Rowland Mallet and Roderick Hudson were meant to meet. A rich and sensible man, Rowland is ecstatic when Roderick, a beautiful but somewhat selfish sculptor, accepts his offer of joining him in Rome for two years to develop his artistic talents. To complicate matters, however, Rowland has fallen in love for the first time right before their departure and did not get a chance to express his feelings. But, as it turns out, he may never get to, because Roderick has just asked the same woman to marry him. Influenced, as he was, by Nathaniel Hawthorne in this early period, Henry James' wrote `Roderick Hudson' (1879) in a much more accessible way than his later novels. In fact, this is perfect for the contemporary literature fan with an interest in good love stories and clever character development. that traces the development of the title character, a sculptor. Roderick Hudson is James's first important novel. The theme of Americans in Europe, so important in much of James's work, is already central to the story. Hudson is a young law student in Northampton, Massachusetts, who shows such surprising ability as a sculptor that the rich Rowland Mallett, visiting a cousin in Northampton, decides to stake him to several years of study in Rome, then a center of expatriate American society. The story has to do not only with Roderick's growth as an artist and the problems it brings, but also as a man susceptible to his new environment, and indeed his occasional rivalries with his American friend and patron.
Christopher Newman, a somewhat awkward but well-meaning American businessman traveling in Europe for the first time, meets and falls in love with the aristocratic young widow Claire de Bellegarde. But her French family does not like his American ways and oppose his offer of marriage. When he discovers a dirty family secret, however, the tables are suddenly turned. But what should he do with upper hand? Despite being one of Henry James earliest works, `The American' (1877) flows more like a contemporary novel than his later work, mixing social comedy and melodrama to perfection.

Enwrapped in indescribable mysteriousness, `The Figure in the Carpet' (1896) is a short story by the American-born British writer Henry James. It explores the meaning of art and how it is found in what other people see. Hugh Vereker is a famous author who says the secret to his greatness and skill is hidden in his works `like a complex figure in a Persian carpet'. When the narrator of the story meets Vereker, he becomes obsessed with discovering the secret meaning of his favourite author's works. Those who enjoy Henry James' short story will likely find ´Eureka´ by Anthony Quinn interesting as The Figure is an important part of the plot. Henry James (1843-1916) was an American-born, British author, and one of the founders of the school of realism in fiction. His inventive use of interior monologues and unreliable narrators, brought a complexity and depth to his work that made him hugely popular. A prolific writer, he published numerous novels, articles, travel books, biographies and plays. Many of his stories have been adapted for TV and film, such as `What Maisie Knew' (2012) starring Steve Coogan and Julianne Moore. However, it is his celebrated Gothic novella `The Turn of the Screw' (1898), regarded as one of the greatest ghost stories ever written, that has been adapted more than any other. Most recently, the eponymous 2009 BBC TV series starring Michelle Dockery, and the Netflix series, `The Haunting of Bly Manor' (2020).
