Le Territoire du Rio Branco marque l'apparition du massif cristallin qui limite au Nord le géosynclinal amazonien. Il est formé dans sa partie Sud par le Bouclier granito-gneissique, arasé, souvent recouvert de sédiments, qui se continue jusqu'en Colombie, au Venezuela et dans les Guyanes anglaises, hollandaises et françaises. Cette grande surface presque plane est interrompue au Nord par un large affleurement de roches volcaniques. Des témoins d'une série sédimentaire qui se retrouve tant au Venezuela qu'en Guyane anglaise, continuent ce massif montagneux, atteignant 2.875 mètres au Mont Roraimã.
