Pourquoi s'intéresser à la Monarchie du Messie de Campanella ? Tout simplement parce que ce texte, rédigé en prison dans l'année 1606, est un véritable traité de l'Empire universel du Pape. Campanella y développe l'idée d'une monarchie chrétienne universelle dans laquelle le Pape est détenteur d'un primat absolu, puisqu'il concentre en sa personne le pouvoir spirituel et temporel suprême. L'Empire du Pape est donc la réunion progressive du genre humain sous une seule loi sacerdotale et sous un unique gouvernement mondial qui doivent en principe réaliser l'utopie d'un âge où les grands maux qui affectent les hommes - les guerres, la faim, les disettes, les épidémies - prennent fin. C'est au sein de ce discours sur l'unité du gouvernement du monde que se situe l'originalité de ce texte et son extraordinaire actualité pour nous. Ne peut-on voir dans cet Empire du Pape la préfiguration théologico-politique de l'Empire politique mondial qui se dessine aujourd'hui, au début du XXIe siècle ? Lorsqu'on se souvient que la plupart des concepts politiques de la modernité sont des versions sécularisées de concepts ecclésiologiques, on est en droit de se poser la question.
