L'approvisionnement, aléatoire, toujours insuffisant, accapare tous les esprits et requiert organisation et patience : on fait des heures de queue devant les devantures de magasin, dans l'espoir d'une livraison puis d'une distribution. « On entend de tout dans la queue, car il y a de tout dans la queue. C'est le choeur antique, l'opinion publique, la grande voix du pays, vox populi, vox Dei. » Paul Achard transcrit des scènes vécues parmi le petit peuple de Paris, il dit la gouaille et la résignation, la grogne, une certaine connivence contre l'ennemi, la colère contre les profiteurs, la flambée des prix, l'aigreur de ne pouvoir se payer le marché noir, les subterfuges des cuisinières qui accommodent les ersatz, les hallucinations provoquées par la faim... Paul Achard voulait faire paraître son livre en 1943, la censure l'interdit. Il parut en 1945. Un témoignage étonnant, jamais republié.
