`An Echo of Antietam' (1898) is a short story by the American author, Edward Bellamy, most famous for his socialist and utopian novel `Looking Backward: 2000-1887' (1888). Young couple Grace Roberts and Philip King are in love, but the civil war is raging and tearing their country apart. Set during the battle of Antietam, which proved a significant turning point in the war, this love story details the horrors of battle and the power of a just cause. A delightful yet emotional read, ´An Echo of Antietam´ is perfect for fans of Ambrose Bierce's ´An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge´ as well as those generally interested in the American Civil War. Edward Bellamy (1850 - May 22) was an American author, journalist and political activist. His novel `Looking Backward: 2000-1887' (1888) was one of the most successful books published in the United States in the 19th century and influenced a generation of intellectuals. Referenced in many Marxist publications of the time, the book inspired the formation of Nationalist Clubs dedicated to spreading his political ideas. Bellamy's other works include the novels `Six to One' (1878), `Dr. Heidenhoff's Process' (1880), `Miss Ludington's Sister' (1885), `Equality' (1897), and `The Duke of Stockbridge; a Romance of Shays' Rebellion (1900)'.
In questi anni pubblica racconti, romanzi e opere teatrali in inglese.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Benjamin Franklin was one of the first to fear German immigrants, who were flooding the colonies in large numbers. He believed that they would never assimilate and would instead, outnumber the English. #2 The story of German immigrants in Pennsylvania highlights the complexity of xenophobia, as well as the different contexts in which it flourishes. German immigrants were not just feared and hated, but they also provided labor and bodies to settle and develop the colony. #3 Germans were among the first settlers in Pennsylvania, and they were extremely positive about the new land. They were given free land, economic opportunity, and religious toleration, all of which attracted more Germans to Pennsylvania. #4 The German immigration to Pennsylvania was primarily made up of farmers and tradesmen, and they were typically Protestant. They were able to acquire large tracts of land and were relatively prosperous within two decades of settlement.

As the people of Persia celebrate the new year, an Indian stranger arrives at the Sultan's court, riding a wooden horse. More than just a mechanical marvel, this horse has the power of flight, and can carry its rider halfway around the world in a single day. When the Sultan proposes to buy it for his son, though, the stranger agrees to exchange it for one thing: the Sultan's daughter. Be transported by a tale of magic and love in "The Enchanted Horse", the thirty-third of the 34 tales in the classic Arabian Nights collection, translated into English by Andrew Lang. A treasure-trove of timeless stories, the One Thousand and One Nights or Arabian Nights have been loved, imitated, and added to over many centuries. Similar to the fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, the Arabian Nights are drawn from the folklore of India, Iran and the Middle East, and were collected in Arabic versions throughout the medieval period; others were added as recently as the eighteenth century. These stories of the exotic East have been popularised for new generations by film adaptations such as Disney's Aladdin, starring Robin Williams and Gilbert Gottfried in 1992, and Will Smith in 2019, and Dreamworks' Sinbad, starring Brad Pitt and Michelle Pfeiffer. They continue to inspire writers as varied as Salman Rushdie and Neil Gaiman, while numerous Bollywood and manga versions attest to their popularity around the world. These stories of magic, adventure and romance have shaped readers' imaginations for generations, and are sure to be retold for years to come. This selection was translated by Andrew Lang from the French versions by Antoine Galland, who was the first to include the stories of Aladdin and Ali Baba. Born in Scotland in 1844, Lang was a scholar of ancient Greek, a journalist, historian, novelist and poet, and the author of 25 popular collections of fairy tales; his edition of the Arabian Nights' Entertainment was published in 1898. He became a Fellow of the British Academy in 1906, and died in 1912.
It's Christmas Eve and the family is gathered. Felicia and Jonas with their four-year-old daughter and their parents. Food, laughter and presents. Of course, they love their family, but their thoughts are somewhere else entierely. It's been too long since they had some alone time, way too long. But then Grandma gives the greatest gift of all - for them to be alone together as the day comes to an end. As soon as the house is empty, Felicia and Jonas throw themselves over each other. It's a joyful, but not all that sacred, Christmas Eve ... "Oh, unholy night" is a Christmas novella about love, restricted needs and the greatest gift of all.
