"L'Uiard" (mot occitan désignant le bon vieux cyclope de l'Odyssée) raconte la vie des bergers de la Crau, au cours de la première moitié du XIXe siècle : des hommes, qui vivaient presque en marge des communautés paysannes, menant une vie très rude et qui, pour l'essentiel, n'avaient guère évolué depuis les Ligures ; mais la modernité - l'industrialisation, la politique, la langue française - pénétrait leur monde et en sapait les structures ancestrales. Inutile de résumer les péripéties du roman : c'en est bien un. Et il sera lu comme tel, comme on lit "Jacquou le Croquant" ou "La bête du Vaccarès". Mais on peut aussi en faire une tout autre lecture : "L'Uiard" est un splendide document ethnographique sur la « pastrille », en même temps qu'un témoignage sur la Provence rurale, au lendemain des illusions socialistes de 1848. C'est pourquoi, je ne doute pas que ce livre s'impose comme un des classiques du domaine méridional. Et pourquoi n'y aurait-il pas un roman ethnographique, comme il y a un roman historique ?
