Time Out of Mind. Illustrated
Time Out of Mind by Rachel Field is a richly atmospheric historical novel set in 19th-century Maine, weaving a tale of forbidden love, family loyalty, and the pull of the sea. Winner of the National Book Award for Fiction in 1935, the novel showcases Field's lyrical prose and deep understanding of human emotion and regional identity.
The story follows Kate Fernald, a young woman from a proud but struggling seafaring family in a small coastal town. When a wealthy shipowner's family moves into the nearby estate, Kate is drawn into a world of privilege and expectation-especially through her complex relationship with the heir, Simon. As Kate grapples with her sense of duty to her family and her yearning for a different life, the novel unfolds as a deeply felt exploration of class, independence, and sacrifice.
Rachel Field paints the New England setting with vivid detail, capturing the rhythms of life along the coast and the emotional undercurrents of a close-knit community. Her characters are rendered with warmth and realism, their inner lives as rich as the historical backdrop against which they struggle.
Time Out of Mind is a haunting, eloquent novel that blends romance, history, and social commentary-a true American classic that still resonates today.
