All This, and Heaven Too. Illustrated

All This, and Heaven Too by Rachel Field is a sweeping historical novel of love, scandal, and political intrigue set in 19th-century France. Based on the true story of the author's great-aunt, Henriette Deluzy-Desportes, the novel became a bestseller upon its publication in 1938 and was later adapted into a major Hollywood film starring Bette Davis.

The story follows Henriette, a well-educated and independent young woman who becomes governess to the children of the Duc and Duchesse de Praslin in a turbulent and decadent Parisian household. As Henriette is drawn into the emotional and political tensions of the family, her close relationship with the Duc leads to gossip, jealousy, and ultimately a scandal that rocks French society and contributes to the fall of the July Monarchy.

Rachel Field masterfully combines historical detail with deep psychological insight, creating a novel that is both intellectually engaging and emotionally powerful. Through Henriette's perspective, the novel explores themes of forbidden love, personal sacrifice, class boundaries, and the role of women in a rigid society.

All This, and Heaven Too is a richly layered narrative that blends romance, history, and tragedy-a timeless classic that continues to captivate readers with its elegance and emotional depth. All This, and Heaven Too by Rachel Field is a sweeping historical novel of love, scandal, and political intrigue set in 19th-century France.
