Robert Southey (1774-1843) était un écrivain, poète, traducteur et biographe romantique anglais. Il est aujourd'hui surtout connu pour son conte « Boucle d'Or et les Trois Ours ». Un passioné de la Révolution Française, il publie en 1794 avec Samuel Coleridge une pièce de théâtre intitulée « La Chute de Robespierre ». Il se maria aussi avec la belle-soeur de celui-ci. De plus, il recommanda à Charlotte Brontë, qui lui dédia plusieurs de ses écrits, d'abandonner l'écriture, car cela allait selon lui à l'encontre des devoirs d'une femme.
