Lancelot, despite being the bravest of the knights, is ugly, and ape-like, so that he calls himself the Chevalier mal fet - "The Ill-Made Knight". As a child, Lancelot loved King Arthur and spent his entire childhood training to be a knight of the round table. When he arrives and becomes one of Arthur's knights, he also becomes the king's close friend. This causes some tension, as he is jealous of Arthur's new wife Guinevere. In order to please her husband, Guinevere tries to befriend Lancelot and the two eventually fall in love. T.H. White's version of the tale elaborates greatly on the passionate love of Lancelot and Guinevere. Suspense is provided by the tension between Lancelot's friendship for King Arthur and his love for and affair with the queen.

England Have My Bones was a well-received memoir about a year spent in England, staying in a workman's cottage and writing this book, while engaging in falconry, hunting & fishing. The book is written in the form of a diary running from 3rd March 1934 to the 3rd March 1935. The author fishes, hunts, shoots ducks, learns to fly a small aeroplane, and keeps a snake as a pet. He does these things one at a time and obsessively, being the sort of person who needs to be the best at everything he tries. The author of "The Once and Future King" began keeping this diary to record the delights and constant surprises that a city dweller happens upon when he leaves the urban world behind and lives in the countryside. The poetry of fire, the mystery of trees, the marvels of trout fishing, the joy of the hunt and the delicious comfort of a cozy blazing fire are all described, and much more. An essential read for the keen or just curious country sportsman/woman.

Part suspense thriller, part mystery novel, partly set at Cambridge University, where White himself had recently studied, but also at Pemberley, in Derbyshire. If you are an admirer of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, you might surmise that the name of Darcy comes into the novel. Described by T.H. White as a study in claustrophobia and fear. Police Inspector Buller is called upon to investigate two mysterious deaths in a Cambridge College. The Inspector is able to solve the mystery, but cannot find sufficient evidence to convict the clever murderer. The murderer and Buller are reunited when an attempt is made on the life of Inspector Buller's host Charles Darcy at the country retreat of Pemberley. The story climaxes when an attempt is made to discover where the killer is hiding-and he has abducted the hostess into the gloom with him.

This amusing foray into eighteenth century literature is an entertaining tabloid biography of an age not unlike our own; men and women of fashion led their lives under the avid scrutiny of a public with a sharp appetite for scandal and sensation. In the period between the so-called Age of Reason and the Romantic Revival - that which the author calls the Age of Scandal - aristocratic and privileged eccentrics flourished. Here we meet notorious persons such as the libertine Marquis de Sade, and the Countess of Kingston who journeyed to Rome in the hope of seducing the Pope.
