Asimis Books | 15 September 2025

The Classic Collection of R. Austin Freeman: Dr. Thorndyke Mysteries gathers together the finest works of one of the true masters of detective fiction. Freeman, often credited as the inventor of the "inverted detective story," brought a unique scientific precision and clarity of style to the mystery genre. This illustrated collection presents both his celebrated novels and a rich selection of shorter tales, allowing readers to follow Dr. John Thorndyke, the brilliant medico-legal detective, across some of his most ingenious investigations. From the suspenseful Red Thumb Mark to the atmospheric The Eye of Osiris and the psychological depths of Helen Vardon's Confession, Freeman's fiction reflects the golden age of crime literature at its most inventive. The collection showcases Freeman's ability to blend medical knowledge, forensic science, and tight plotting into mysteries that feel both intellectual and compelling. In the shorter stories-such as The Case of the White Footprints, The Moabite Cipher, or The Mandarin's Pearl-Thorndyke applies his keen observational skills to seemingly insoluble puzzles, often revealing the unexpected through subtle details. Each narrative balances logical deduction with human drama, offering readers both the thrill of unraveling crime and the satisfaction of scientific reasoning brought to life. This anthology is not only a comprehensive treasury for long-time admirers of Dr. Thorndyke but also an inviting entry point for new readers discovering Freeman's legacy. The carefully illustrated editions add visual richness to the intricate mysteries, enhancing the immersive experience. Combining atmosphere, intellect, and historical significance, this thirty-volume collection affirms Freeman's place alongside Conan Doyle and G.K. ebook cover of John Thorndyke's Cases, by R. Austin Freeman
Saga Egmont | 23 May 2022

John Thorndyke is a Sherlock Holmes inspired forensic detective employed primarily as a visionary expert witness. He uses the available science and technology of his era to determine and demonstrate how and when certain crimes were perpetrated. Unlike Holmes, the Edwardian sleuth Thorndyke is roundly mocked for his deductive abilities. R. Austin Freeman presents eight cases for Dr. John Thorndyke, including a classic locked-room murder mystery and a dead woman discovered on a train. Dr. Thorndyke punctiliously gathers the evidence of stray footprints, dust, hairs, fibres and even a single blue sequin to resolve the mystery and see that justice is served. A compelling and fascinating detective set of classic detective stories. A decidedly steampunk atmosphere for the present-day reader. Highly recommended for enthusiasts of Conan Doyle's 'Sherlock Holmes' novels as well as the popular 2010 TV series 'Sherlock' starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Fans of the 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' series will also be intrigued by the life and ways of literature's first forensic detective. R Austin Freeman (1862-1943) was an English doctor. He created the first and best-known forensic scientist, Dr John Thorndyke. Freeman was born in London, the son of a tailor. He took a medical degree from Middlesex Hospital Medical College. He married Annie Elizabeth Edwards in 1887 and had two sons. He travelled to the Gold Coast of Africa for work, but after seven years was invalided out. He returned to England unable to work in medicine and began writing fiction in 1902. There followed a long series of Dr Thorndyke mysteries, including some of the first 'inverted' mystery stories, where the identity of the criminal is revealed at the outset and the interest of the story lies in seeing how the detection is done.

audiobook cover of The Eye of Osiris (UNABRIDGED), by R. Austin Freeman
Slingshot Books LLC | 22 August 2021

The Eye of Osiris is an early example from the Dr. Thorndyke series of detective stories written by R. Austin Freeman. In these stories, the author drew on his extensive medical and scientific knowledge for his main character, a medico-legal expert who relies on forensic evidence and logical deduction in solving cases. In this case, Thorndyke steps in to investigate the disappearance of one John Bellingham, an English gentleman and amateur Egyptologist, who has vanished under very mysterious circumstances. Thorndyke's involvement in the case arises from a both purely professional interest in the unique character of the case, as well as from the fact that a young doctor and former student of his has recently become closely acquainted with the missing man's brother and niece.
