ebook cover of Histoire de la lutte entre la science et la théologie, by Andrew Dickson White
Collection XIX | 28 June 2016

Quick Read | 15 February 2024

Discover a new way to read classics with Quick Read. This Quick Read edition includes both the full text and a summary for each chapter. - Reading time of the complete text: about 3 hours - Reading time of the summarized text: 8 minutes "A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom" is a two-volume book published in 1896 by Andrew Dickson White. The book explores the conflict between science and religion throughout history. It discusses various topics such as the literal interpretation of Genesis, the opposition faced by scientists like Copernicus and Galileo, the resistance against geological theories, the belief in demonic possession and witchcraft, and the condemnation of usury. The book also highlights the flawed arguments and poor scholarship of White, who popularized the idea of an adversarial relationship between science and religion. However, recent scholarship has shown that the warfare thesis is neither useful nor accurate in describing the relationship between science and religion. Historians have rejected the myths propagated by White and other authors, such as the belief that people thought the world was flat before Columbus.

ebook cover of The Fall of Man and the Scope of Anthropology, by Andrew Dickson White, R. R. Marett
Human and Literature Publishing | 26 October 2023

What is the ideal scope of anthropology? Anthropology is the whole history of man as fired and pervaded by the idea of evolution. Man in evolution - that is the subject in its full reach. Anthropology studies man as he occurs at all known times. It studies him as he occurs in all known parts of the world. It studies him body and soul together-as a bodily organism, subject to conditions operating in time and space, which bodily organism is in intimate relation with a soul-life, also subject to those same conditions. Having an eye to such conditions from first to last, it seeks to plot out the general series of the changes, bodily and mental together, undergone by man in the course of his history. Its business is simply to describe. But, without exceeding the limits of its scope, it can and must proceed from the particular to the general; aiming at nothing less than a descriptive formula that shall sum up the whole series of changes in which the evolution of man consists.

ebook cover of The Warfare of Science: Struggle for the Liberty of Science, by Andrew Dickson White
Literature and Knowledge Publishing | 4 September 2019

"I purpose to present an outline of the great, sacred struggle for the liberty of science - a struggle which has lasted for so many centuries, and which yet continues. A hard contest it has been; a war waged longer, with battles fiercer, with sieges more persistent, with strategy more shrewd than in any of the comparatively petty warfares of Cæsar or Napoleon or Moltke.I shall ask you to go with me through some of the most protracted sieges, and over some of the hardest-fought battle-fields of this war. We will look well at the combatants; we will listen to the battle-cries; we will note the strategy of leaders, the cut and thrust of champions, the weight of missiles, the temper of weapons."
