Figure lointaine et floue de la première des "Filles du Feu" publiée en 1854, Angélique entraîne l'auditeur au coeur de l'Idéal et du Romantisme (l'ouvrage est d'ailleurs dédié à Alexandre Dumas, autre grande figure du romantisme). Ce récit, entrecoupé de digressions, à la manière des contes orientaux, agace et retient comme un philtre du temps passé. On ne peut s'arrêter, s'empêcher de continuer à chercher, à la manière de Gérard de Nerval, pour entr'apercevoir finalement Angélique, cette figure d'un amour mythique. Le récit, conçu comme un écrin, invite, au travers d'une quête de documents historiques, à une introspection révélatrice : l'Amour.

Gérard de Nerval
Gérard de Nerval (French: ; 22 May 1808 – 26 January 1855) was the pen name of Gérard Labrunie, a French writer of poetry and prose, essayist, and translator. He was a major figure during the era of French romanticism, and best known for his novellas and poems, especially the collection Les Filles du feu (The Daughters of Fire), which included the novella Sylvie and the poem "El Desdichado". Through his translations, Nerval played a major role in introducing French readers to the works of German Romantic authors, including Klopstock, Schiller, Bürger and Goethe. His later work merged poetry and journalism in a fictional context and influenced Marcel Proust. His last novella, Aurélia ou le rêve et la vie, influenced André Breton and Surrealism.
