Taken by the Star Marshal
Mara Okonkwo was the best salvage pilot on the Belt until she cut a Marshal's impound. Now she flies for three of them.
Vane needs a pilot who can run without a beacon. Rusk needs someone to take the fall when it goes wrong. Ilex needs someone who can read a chart no one has read in ninety years.
Mara takes the deal. The chart leads into a Fold scar where no ship should survive - to a lost colony ship, still lit, still full of children descended from a mutiny the Marshals' Bureau has spent a century erasing.
She could report it. Rusk wants to burn it. Vane wants to bury it. Ilex wants the truth published. Mara wants all three men, in that order, and then she wants the manifest broadcast to every relay on the route.
When their commissions are stripped, she offers them a berth. Three disgraced Marshals, one pilot, one Fold route nobody else can fly. She keeps them - and the haul.
